Almost every time Palo Alto native Colin Roche goes to the airport, he gets stopped and quizzed or searched.

On 20 to 30 occasions, what raised security officers’ eyebrows were what Roche carried with him: the rocket-shaped metal pens called PenAgains that he invented and sells through his San Mateo company, Pacific Writing Instruments.

“They’re like ‘that’s not a pen,’” he said.

So now when he travels, he carries enough of the ergonomically designed pens to hand out to surprised skeptics.

“Nobody’s reinvented the pen really, ever,” he said this week from the same corner booth at the Oasis, a Menlo Park pizzeria and watering hole, where the company came into being.

With their re-engineered pen now being sold in 20 countries and 20,000 stores in the United States, Roche and his partner, Bobby Ronsse, have set their sights on their next venture — the reinvented pencil. Based on the same design concept as their pen, the company’s new child-oriented pencils are just starting to hit stores.

Unlike standard stick pens and pencils, which users often grasp with the wrong fingers or squeeze too tightly, PenAgain’s pronged writing instruments force the writer to assume the correct “tripod grasp,” with the pointer finger resting on the pencil’s grooved body.

“It forces you into the exact posture you’re supposed to use,” said Roche, bemoaning the fact that in the era of computers, many teachers are less vigilant about writing techniques. For students with fine motor skills problems and attention deficit disorder or older adults with diseases such as arthritis or Parkinson’s, the pens and pencils often make writing much easier, he said. “You don’t have the same pressure,” said Rob Cantor, CEO of the Philadelphia-based Insigner Machine Co. Diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease eight years ago, Cantor could no longer write legible notes on company memos until he discovered Roche’s pen.”The way you grip it, it’s easier to control the writing instrument,” he said.

Detention-designed

The basic concept behind both the re-engineered pen and pencil did not spring from a design or medical class, but out of detention one Saturday morning 21 years ago at Palo Alto High School that Roche earned by being late to class one too many times.

“It’s like ‘The Breakfast Club,’” Roche said, referring to the 1985 film about Saturday morning detention. During a detention break, the bored junior ended up strolling around the same Saturday flea market that is still held at the school every weekend.

There he bought a keychain with a robot-shaped pen and spent the rest of the day melting it down with a borrowed lighter. Later, Roche went home to tinker in his family garage “like the mad scientist” armed with a soldering iron and cheap pens.

Roche had always gotten cramps from writing, and his goal was to make a pen that would be comfortable to use. But after he finally made such a pen, no one else seemed to care.

While attending California State Polytechnic University, Roche said his fellow students were less than impressed.

“If you got to know me for about five minutes, I’d say ‘I’ve got this idea for a pen,’ and people would be like, ‘Oh man …’” he said. “Nobody gave me any indication it was a good idea.”

Roche became a sales executive, but never forgot about his pen concept.

Production begins

Finally in 2001, at his 30th birthday party at the Oasis, Ronsse agreed to sketch out a file to manufacture the pen “just so I could shut the heck up about this,” Roche said.

Within a few days, they had a sample product — a translucent red pen. The pair met at the same corner booth for the next nine months to get the company off the ground.

They spent the night before their first major trade show in New York in their hotel room super-gluing together the parts for 200 pens because an ultrasonic welder was not available.

Then in 2002, Newsweek magazine featured the pen in its “briefcase of the future,” a mention that brought 5,000 orders in three weeks. Roche had to call on family and friends to help stuff ink into pens and drove five laundry bags of pens to the post office to mail.

Later that year, the company landed its first major round of investments and started manufacturing the product in China.

In 2006, Roche and Ronsse got stuck in traffic before a big meeting with Wal-Mart executives and arrived with only three minutes to spare. But in two test runs, including one in the week after graduation — “the only bad time to be a pen manufacturer” — the pen sold well, and Wal-Mart is now one of several major chains that carry both the pen and, soon, the Twist ‘N Write pencil.

Designed for smaller hands and made in bright, glittery colors, the new pencil is easier for children with fine motor skills problems or who have trouble focusing, said Bonnie Bogdanoff, a New Jersey pediatric physical therapist who noticed the pens and called the company to ask when they would come out with a pencil.

“Because of the design, (children) can’t fist the pencil,” she said. “They tend not to grip it so hard and apply extra pressure.”

Roche does not pretend his products will replace the standard ballpoint, but he hopes they can provide an alternative, or “what snowboarding did to skiing.”

“We joke maybe someday people will be driving back to go see the shed,” he said.

Last week we debuted our new Twist ‘n Write Pencil for kids in Chicago at a trade show called NAEYC (National Association of Educators of Young Children). Basically it was attended by about 20,000 teachers of grades k-6. We had a pretty good idea that the new pencil would be well received at the show but had no idea of the riot it would create. The first part of the show started Wednesday at 5:30 pm. I barely got the booth up in time while Bobby was stuck in that famous O’Hare traffic trying to get to the convention center. When the doors opened to the show it was nice and smooth in the beginning. After about 20 minutes though when the first wave made it to our booth ( we were near the back of the convention center) it started to get out of control. Many teachers had heard about the Twist ‘n Write but never actually tried it or seen it in person. Once word got out that we were at the show we literally had a mob of teachers surrounding the booth wanting to purchase samples. At one point I was standing on my chair with 2 pencils in each hand giving a demonstration to the crowd on how to use the product. People were yelling out orders like “I want a 4-pack” or “I’ll take a case of the 2 packs”. I felt like a trader on the New York Stock Exchange. The pictures above were taken during the slow times to give you an idea of what the booth looks like.

You have to understand that this is the exact group that sees on a regular basis what happens to a child if they can’t hold a pencil properly. It sounds crazy but it turns out that if kids don’t take to holding a pencil in a comfortable manner, the tendency to “want” to write is decreased because the experience is more of a chore. As a result they write less. This is a slippery slope because if they take less notes or cannot turn in legible homework that the teacher can read then they get marked down. Meanwhile the kid could be a genius. One teacher told us that a pencil that motivates kids to write while making it fun is the “holy grail” of educational products, its that important she said. We said “wow”.

After the first full day of the show we completely sold out. We had our warehouse overnight double the amount from what we shipped before but it did not arrive to our hotel until 10:30 am. Well, the show had started at 9 am and Bobby went off to man the booth while I waited for the delivery. Of course the delivery was late for some reason. I started getting calls from Bobby telling me we were gong to have a riot on our hands if I didn’t have them there by 11:30, which is what he had been telling everybody to come back. He even started to take cash deposits on cases of pencils ahead of time. When I finally showed up with a pallet full of product the game was back on. As fast as we opened the boxes we were selling them. our both was a compete mess. We sold out again by the last day. We learned a ton though and made some great contacts in the education channel.

Here are some recent comments from parents and others on how the pencil is impacting kids lives. Who would have thought? We love the comments and hope to get many more. This is the stuff that makes this whole journey that much more rewarding.

COMMENTS

I bought your pencils at the NAEYC conference in Chicago and I will tell you what! Your brilliant!

I have been a pre-K teacher for 20 years and have always believed in teaching young children how to hold their pencils “correctly” by pinching. Some of these young minds just can’t grasp the idea… Until now!

With today’s pressure on early childhood educators to have these 4 and 5 year old children reading and writing before they can get “into” kindergarten, this pencil has made my job so much easier and has made it fun for my students. Not only is it “fun” for them to use, they are totally training themselves to use other writing tools correctly! My students have complete control over writing now, my only wish is that I had gotten a couple dozen more!

Thanks! I wish I would have thought of it! LOL!

My son Ryan was diagnosed with ADHD in October of 2006 when he was 10. Since Ryan was in kindergarten, teachers had constantly complained because he did not hold his pencil correctly and his handwriting was very messy. This has followed him all throughout his school career to date causing him increased self-consciousness because for him writing was very laborious. In my search for knowledge of ADHD I had learned that fine motor control is affected by ADHD. Once we began medication for his ADHD his schoolwork improved but his handwriting did not because so many years of holding his pencil wrong it was second nature for him. You see because the ADHD was affecting his fine motor skills involved with his fingers and holding the pencil he was trying to focus so much on holding the pencil and trying to control his writing that it was taking away from his actual time to write. This was causing him great frustration and anxiety so timed test that involved writing sentences and paragraphs we not being completed. He loves his cool “rocket ship pen” and we do not have to really push him to do his writing because he is finding it less laborious to write.
Just got back from a great trip to Tokyo last week. We previously signed on a new supplier that will market and distribute the entire Penagain line of products. They kicked off the partnership at a tradeshow held at the “Tokyo Big Site” (picture above). I was the “Featured Penagain Inventor” in the booth and was on hand to lend support to the launch of Penagain in Japan. It was kind of a surreal experience for me with a tinge of the movie “Lost in Translation”. I had an interpreter/guide that would introduce me as Mr. Colin San to VIP’s, media reps, wholesalers, and distributors as they came into the booth. I have to admit I had a great time being in a far off foreign land watching the reaction on peoples faces as they came into the booth. I think it was received very well and in the short time I have been back they have already received some large orders for distribution. They had sold the Penagain into “Tokyu Hands” department store a few months ago for a test market, this is one of the largest retailers in Japan. They took me on a tour of the city and walked me into the store to see it displayed(above). It was cool to walk into this store and find the Penagain sitting on the shelves. I sat there for a few minutes and watched people check them out. Of course I could not resist helping demonstrate how it works with my “charades” like gestures. I think I even managed to sell a few. It was nostalgiac for me to see this little pens sitting on the shelf on the other side of the world waiting for a new home. I sometimes reflect on that detention many years ago where “dread turned to boredom and boredom turned to daydreaming and daydreaming turned to this crazy idea for a pen”. Our new Penagain Japan website can be found here http://penagain-japan-value.com/office.html
On the last day I had some time to kill and went on the hunt to find a game of “Japanese Futsal”. This is a 5 vs.5 soccer game that is played on a much smaller field. It’s a fairly new game in Japan and seems to be growing in popularity. After what seemed like a 2 hour jog through many neigborhoods I found this “Futsal” center above. Lucky for me the receptionist spoke a little english and was able to ask one of the teams if it would be ok if I played a few games with them. This team welcomed me with open arms and allowed me to play a number of games with them. I handed out the few Penagain’s I had and exhanged cards with the team leaders. The pictures of the team above speak a thousand words on how gracious the Japanese were to this California kid during my trip.

Last week I was fortunate enough to be invited for an interview on a CNBC show called “The Big Idea with Donny Deutsch”. You can see it here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h8QaIiQsWB4 It was a great experience. I happened to be in New York for a tradeshow anyway so the timing worked out perfect. They sent a limo to the Javvits center in New York to pick me up. I have to admit I felt like a pimp driving thru Manhattan in a plush town car on my way to the CNBC studios. The whole process went pretty quick. They get you into make up and doll you up, put a Mic on you and send you into the studio. Within 15 minutes of arriving I was engaged in a conversation on-air with Donny. He asked me some basic questions about how it all started, where the name came from, how we got into Wal-Mart etc. I hope he shows the new chromed metal Penagain (ErgoSleek above) I gave him. I also tried to mentioned our new kids Pencil version that launches in a few weeks. I think it went well, but I guess I’ll know for sure in a few hours.

Whats funny is that a few hours later I was at JFK boarding a plane and had an itch to scratch on my face, I looked at my hand and realized I smeared my make-up!!!!

The last few months have been a whirlwind of activity in getting all of our major retailer orders out the door. To date we are now shipping to Wal-Mart, OfficeDepot, Staples, Walgreen, CVS, Fed Ex Kinko’s, Publix, AAFES, Fred Meyer. The list keeps growing and at this point we are now focused on becoming a good supplier. I.e, don’t screw things up on these first big orders, ship on time, make sure all the barcodes are accessible to the cashiers, etc. In other words, to quote a good friend of mine “Dont ship sh*t”. These big retailers dont want to “Buy” problems as one of them once told me. A quick way to bankrupt your company is to lose sight of this. The dream of getting this placed in as many stores as possible to let everyone try it at least once is actually materializing before our eyes. Scary thought when it actually starts to happen.

We have also been on some major roadtrips to not only build international distribution but to visit our manufacturing operations in the Far East. By far though the coolest place we have visited is Dubai. The trip was set up to meet all of the major distributors and wholesalers in the Middle East region. It was a real eye opener and a successful trip. Some of the pictures above detail the experience. It was strange to be in the desert and ski at a Shopping mall ski resort. To be honest, the snow was pretty good.

My apologies for the infrequent posts. It seems like the past few months have found us on a never ending road trip. China, New York, Pittsburgh, Orlando, Miami, Boston, Chicago,Bentonville,Providence, LA are a few of the highlights. Some of the pictures above are from the road. With all this travel I have finally been bumped up to elite status on US Airways which means I get automatic upgrades to first class. Makes a big difference All you can drink, eat, read, etc. Its almost relaxing at this point to sit in first class for a red eye to New York. I’ve had some of my best 3 hour naps on these trips.

Since we last left off we have now picked up CVS, Staples, OfficeMax, the Navy, and Office Depot Canada. At this stage our goal is to secure enough financial resources to bring this company to the next level of success. We are very excited about the response so far from the market and look forward to launching the child’s “Twist N’ Write and Ergo-Sleek version next month. The best thing we can do now is to master the accounts we have built up, service them well and expand our presence in the stores. The idea is not to spread ourselves to thin and risk losing any of these major players we have on board.

We were lucky enough to get some great press these past few weeks. The biggest was another spread in the Wall Street Journal. The story is to long to post so the link is here. We were told the picture was one of the biggest ever done for a feature story in the Journals history. http://www.startupjournal.com/columnists/enterprise/20061114-bounds.html

We were also fortunate to get this nice story from Mike Cassidy from the San Jose Mercury News.

Cassidy: Modest creator of PenAgain enjoys success

By Mike Cassidy

Mercury News Columnist

When I wrote on my blog that Colin Roche, the inventor of the PenAgain, probably wouldn’t return my calls these days, he did.

Return my call. I was stunned.

This is the PenAgain, people, the wacky wishbone-shaped ballpoint sweeping the globe and igniting a writing revolution. I couldn’t imagine that the rebel Roche would have time to talk to me.

I hope I don’t sound like I’m making fun. I did that once, and I’m writing now to say I was wrong.

“I don’t remember it as bad as you wrote it,'’ Roche, who grew up in Palo Alto, says of my blog post about our first encounter, www.mercextra

.com/blogs/cassidy/2006/11/13/

i-know-how-to-pick-em/.

It must have been three or four years ago that Roche wrote to me suggesting a column about his ergonomically correct and aesthetically challenged ballpoint pen. I took one look at the homely thing. I considered the too-cute tale about how he invented it during detention at Palo Alto High School. I took a pass.

PenAgain a hit

No way was a freaky pen going anywhere, I figured. And the high school detention story? What do I look like? Somebody who would believe that Internet powerhouse eBay started because Pierre Omidyar’s girlfriend needed a way to build her Pez dispenser collection?

But now the PenAgain is suddenly everywhere. Wal-Mart is carrying it. Walgreens is ordering them by the truck load. The things are in Office Depot. They’ve been featured on local and national television news and the Wall Street Journal, with a circulation of 2 million, has adopted the company for a series on the trajectory of a small business.

“Since that story broke,'’ Roche says, “it’s been absolutely insane.'’

He says the company has signed up 8,000 more stores as customers since the Journal featured the PenAgain earlier this month.

So, maybe he had a pretty good story after all. But Roche, who lives in San Mateo with his wife and two kids, is a classy guy. He didn’t return my call to be cranky or gloat.

Making over the pen

He can see that a guy who says he’s changing the face of writing might seem a little odd. He can really see it, because now that he and company co-founder Bobby Ronsse are considered the guys who came out of nowhere with the hot new thing, they get calls from all sorts of dreamers.

“It’s kind of flattering,'’ Roche says, “but at the same time, you go, `Man.’ ‘’ As in, man, that’s stupid.

Roche is proof that not everything invented in Silicon Valley is high-tech. With everyone looking forward, he says, maybe there’s an advantage to looking back at old technology that could use a makeover.

It’s not a widely held belief in the valley. It was lonely early on, hanging around with the other valley inventors and entrepreneurs. He’d go to the schmooze fests where everybody’s trying to connect with a business mind or start-up capital or both.

“I wouldn’t say I got laughed at, but I got a lot of interesting looks,'’ he says. “There’d be a Stanford Ph.D. who’d come up with a new way to synthesize DNA, and I’d whip out — at the time I only had a prototype — this funky-looking pen.'’

But now? Now Pacific Writing Instruments, as the men call their company, is getting orders faster than they can fill them. And recently, a would-be investor sent them a check for $100,000 — think of it as an interest-free loan, he said.

Roche swears it’s true. He swears the detention story is true, too, though he acknowledges it could use some embellishment. Seems he landed in detention because he’d accumulated too many tardies. Boring.

“I need to think of something else.'’

When he does, I’m all ears.

So we finally made it to the point of no return. Its a strange feeling to finally be here. We are very excited yet humbled by the many challenges we see ahead of us. We have many balls in the air at the given moment. These are all huge opportunities that if managed right can lead us to the “promised land”. The flip side to this is that if any one of these balls falls or goes sideways on us it can have a major impact on our efficiency as a business, which just happens to be our main asset. To date we are now in Wal-Mart, Walgreens and OfficeDepot along with about 5,000 independent retailers. As far as we can tell it looks like most of the other big players will be on board in 07′. So far so good, if they all hit we are looking at some 50,000 stores in the US alone. Its a good problem to have yet you still have to look at it with some degree of worry.

Some recent updates.

We just got back from China a few weeks ago where we finalized the details of starting a joint venture with our factory. This is a big step for Bobby and I. This will allow us to apply what we have learned these past few years to grow another brand in conjunction with Penagain. The picture above was taken in Hong Kong harbor just after we concluded the details of the company’s charter.

We have also been busy getting our higher end metal Penagain ready to launch. It will be called the “ErgoSleek” (picture above) and will made in a unique metal body with a high gloss finish. It will also have soft “gel” pads where your fingers rest for added comfort. At best we hope to have this available in limited quantities by Dec. 1 on our website. We will then be pushing this into our independent retail channel the beginning of the year.

The final work on the childs pencil version is almost done and we hope the finished product will also be available by December. We will be calling it the “Twist N’ Write”. They will be sold in a multi-pack of 5 pencils, all in #2 lead. The image above is a sample of the packaging. We are open to suggestions.

The last two pictures from above are from our visit to Wal-Mart headquarters in good ol’ Bentonville, Arkansas. They will be carrying the above holiday display in 800 stores. Hits stores end of November.

We were invited to the set of Desperate Housewives for a Cancer benefit thrown by Eva Langoria. We were given an area to hand out PenAgains to the celebrities and schmooze with the industry execs. Aside from an interesting experience, we were glad that some of the stars picked up on our marker as being a great fit for autographs. Carlos Mencia from “Mind of Mencia” loved it, actually got downright giddy about it because he was just about to go on tour and said he would be doing about 5,000 autographs a month. George Lopez dug it as well. Can’t say to much about Jimmy Smits though. Acted like he was the Pope or something with his entourage. What an eye opener to how some of these ego’s can be in Tinsel town.
